Grades 6-8: Develop Algebraic Understanding and Fluency through Tasks and Discussions

Algebra and algebraic thinking are pervasive throughout the middle school standards and are prerequisites for future success in mathematics. Learning deeper when conceptual understanding develops with meaningful tasks, and student engagement is greatest when students are involved in dialogue.

Each session will focus on a sequence of tasks that develop key concepts in the algebra and number progressions. InstrucĀ­ tion will model how to facilitate the tasks in the classroom and use class interactions for greater student engagement and deeper understanding.
Woven throughout each session will be discussions around:

  • How to choose and sequence tasks for student learning,
  • Using questioning strategies to develop greater understanding, and
  • How to modify and extend tasks for greater engagement and fluency.

SESSIONS

Session 1: Feb. 11, 2017 - The Algebraic Code
Algebra is a code used to describe the way the world functions. Starting with situations as expressions, these tasks progress to setting up equations to determine unknown rates or quantities.

Session 2: Mar. 18, 2017 - Modeling with Algebra
Representing the world with numbers, graphs, and equations allows one to see patterns and recognize interactions. Extending the patterns and interactions algebraically provides understanding and solutions to problems.

Session 3: Apr. 29, 2017 - Algebraic Applications
The common student question, "When will I use this?" will be answered in this session. We will look at a variety of highly engaging tasks that require students to practice and apply their algebraic understanding. These algebra tasks will relate to geometry, data and statistics, and science.

Attendance at all 3 sessions qualifies for 1 optional professional development units through Fresno Pacific University. Registration for units will be available on Feb. 11 only. Participants can register for one, two, or all three of the sessions. Participants will leave with 8-10 tasks per session.

Workshop registration is transferrable, but there will be no refunds for cancellations.

Sheldon Erickson
Sheldon Erickson taught third through tenth grade students for 40 years. He has worked with the AIMS Education Foundation for 35 years developing engaging tasks to develop student understanding. He has facilitated workshops across the country focusing on techniques for improving student learning. In retirement he hopes to share with teachers the tasks and teaching skills he has honed through classroom experience.
