This unit provides the foundation for future studies in measuring dimensions. Students work with string and straws to develop the concept of perimeter as distance around, then with square tiles to develop the concept of area as a measure of covering. When students discover that the number of square tiles in a row times the number of rows, the formula A= l * w takes on meaning. Includes a CD with video help for each activity, as well as PDFs to facilitate printing and use on interactive boards.
