Help your young students investigate their sense of sight, touch, smell, hearing, and taste. Through the activities in Sense-able Science, students will become aware that they use their senses every day to interpret the world around them. They will learn that senses are often used in conjunction with each other; that sensory perceptions can stimulate emotions and feelings; and that different senses provide different information.

Young learners playfully explore their senses as individual attention is given to each sense. One at a time each sense is introduced with an overview, poem, hands-on activities, and song sung to a familiar tune.

Activities like “Touch and Tell” will delight children as they touch swatches of fabrics ranging from velvet to netting in order to describe the texture as rough, soft or smooth. Watch out for silly faces as they smell objects obscured from view in canisters to discover the differences between oranges, coffee, and onions in “Canned Scents.”

Also included in the book is a final section that provides activities that integrate multiple senses.

Teachers will like the process skills used in Sense-able Science such as observing, sorting and classifying, and comparing and contrasting. Additional skills include collecting and recording of data, interpreting data, applying and generalizing, and communicating. The explorations are also woven together with math, science, language arts and artistic expression.
