Description

Grades Pre-K-2
6 sections—210 pages

It Must Be a Bird is a collection of integrated learning experiences for the young child. Students will learn the processes of science by studying feathers, beaks, feet, eggs and nests. They will also learn the relationship of form and function. Why do some birds have curved beaks while others have long, pointed beaks? Why do some birds have webbed feet while others don’t?

Each of the experiences is highly active and highly engaging. Children will love putting on a set of wings and constructing bird’s feet or role-playing a hatching duckling. What child won’t enjoy making and eating tasty treats such as “Chicken Feed?” (The feed is made up from tasty treats such as dried apples, raisins, sunflower seeds, and nuts.)

Birds provide the topics used in explorations that strive  to develop skills such as observation, comparing and contrasting, classification, measuring, communication, and inferring. Curiosity is encouraged and concept instruction is facilitated through problem solving. Math skills are also applied throughout as students will count objects, and graph and interpret data.

This book contains extensive connections to literature, songs, poetry, and cooking. Students have numerous opportunities for building vocabulary, for writing, and for reading. The companion It Must Be a Bird Big Book—included for free—reinforces the content provided in this activity book. It contains beautiful artwork and facts in a catchy, playful song set to the tune of “Must Be Santa.”
